Farzad Bagher Seirafian
A Contemporary Continuation of the Seirafian Family Legacy in Isfahan Carpets
The Seirafian family is widely regarded as one of the most respected and celebrated names in the history of Persian handmade carpets. For decades, the family has been synonymous with the finest carpets of Isfahan, establishing a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, artistic refinement, and uncompromising quality. Today, the name Seirafian remains one of the most distinguished hallmarks of the Isfahan School and of Persian carpet artistry as a whole.
Born in Isfahan, Iran, in 1982, Farzad Bagher Seirafian was raised in one of the country’s most renowned carpet-making families. Alongside his artistic career, he holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Economics and Management, an academic background that has shaped his disciplined, analytical approach to design, planning, and production. His method combines artistic sensitivity with methodical precision, qualities that are reflected throughout every stage of his work.
Farzad’s entry into the world of handmade carpets was not the result of a later career choice, but rather the natural continuation of a lifelong family tradition. From an early age, he accompanied his father, Master Bagher Seirafian, in carpet design studios and production workshops, gaining first-hand experience in every stage of the creative process—from drawing original designs and selecting premium materials to colour composition, weaving supervision, and final finishing. Over many years, he absorbed the intricate knowledge and craftsmanship that the Seirafian family had accumulated across generations before establishing his own artistic identity.
Today, Farzad Bagher Seirafian represents one of the leading figures of the new generation within the Seirafian School. His work successfully combines the family’s distinguished artistic heritage with a refined contemporary design vision while remaining faithful to the classical identity that has long defined the Isfahan School. His carpets respect traditional principles yet express a renewed artistic spirit that continues to appeal to discerning collectors.
One of the defining characteristics of his work is that creativity begins long before the loom. Farzad devotes exceptional attention to the stages of design and planning, investing considerable time in achieving a balanced artistic composition before weaving begins. This meticulous preparation is reflected in the harmony of every element, the fluid visual movement of each composition, and the perfect balance between colours and ornamental motifs, allowing every design to exist first as an independent work of art before becoming a woven masterpiece.
Farzad’s commitment to craftsmanship is matched only by his dedication to execution. To him, a handmade carpet is not merely a luxury object, but a lasting work of art and a long-term investment. For this reason, every piece is produced with exceptional precision and uncompromising quality. He closely supervises the weaving process on an almost daily basis, ensuring that each carpet faithfully reflects the artistic vision conceived from the very beginning.
His work is also distinguished by the breadth and diversity of its designs. Rather than simply reproducing traditional patterns, Farzad continuously develops and reinterprets them while preserving the authentic spirit of the Isfahan School. His carpets demonstrate a remarkable balance between heritage and innovation, transforming classical Persian aesthetics into compositions with their own distinct artistic identity.
Another defining feature of his work is his refined use of colour. His carpets are recognised for their harmonious and elegant palettes, together with the meticulous incorporation of silk to enhance delicate details and create depth, brilliance, and visual richness. Great care is devoted to the relationship between colour, ornament, and composition, resulting in carpets that achieve complete visual harmony.
Farzad’s philosophy extends beyond design and craftsmanship to the very concept of production itself. He does not believe in mass production or in repeatedly weaving the same design on a large scale. Instead, he deliberately limits the number of examples produced from each design, believing that rarity is an essential element of both artistic and collectible value. As a result, only a very limited number of carpets are woven from each composition, preserving their individuality and enhancing their desirability among collectors. In his view, excessive reproduction diminishes a design’s character, whereas limited production reinforces its exclusivity and long-term significance.
For this reason, many of his designs are never reproduced once their initial limited editions have been completed. This gives collectors a rare opportunity to acquire works that may never become available again, while adding an exceptional level of rarity that is highly valued by collectors of museum-quality Persian carpets.
Among his most celebrated creations is the Gandil carpet, admired for its sophisticated composition, extraordinary richness of detail, and harmonious colour palette that reflects the highest standards of the contemporary Seirafian School. Equally significant is the Royal Hunting Scene, inspired by the celebrated royal hunting traditions of classical Persian art and distinguished by its balanced composition, refined detail, and remarkable artistic richness. Together, these masterpieces perfectly embody Farzad’s philosophy of uniting artistic heritage with innovation, combining technical excellence with refined artistic vision.
Farzad Bagher Seirafian’s carpets are far more than luxurious handmade rugs; they are the result of decades of accumulated experience, countless hours of design, planning, artistic development, and direct supervision throughout every stage of production. Each carpet possesses its own artistic identity while combining beauty, craftsmanship, and rarity, making his works highly sought after by collectors who appreciate both aesthetic excellence and lasting investment value.
